Helpful Hints
  • Begin by going to the "Advanced Search" page of a search engine

  • If you are looking for a name, or ideas that use two or more words, do a "phrase" search
(usually by putting the words you're looking for in double quotes: "stem cell"

  • If your search engine allows truncation or "wild card" searching, you can automatically search for different versions of the word you're looking for by using an asterisk: cell* will find both cell and cells

  • If your search engine does not allow truncation, put the word OR (spelled in capital letters) between different versions of the word you're searching for: cell OR cells

  • Phrase searching and truncation can be combined: "stem cell*"

  • Put the word AND (in capitals) between all the words or phrases that you want to combine: "stem cell*" AND "liver cancer"

  • Read the "Help" or "Tips" page(s) on the search engine you are using
