Library Server Maintenance on May 19

On Monday, May 19 the Libraries will be performing hardware maintenance and software updates to its servers. Access to the library website may be interrupted briefly between 8:00am and 9:00am. Software updates will also be applied to the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) system. The ILL system will be unavailable from 8:00am to as late as 10:00am.

Public Affairs 2008 Display: Seeking Solutions

The Reference & Government Information Department of Meyer Library presents Seeking Solutions: Conflict, Violence and the Courage to Change, in the New Books Area of the Meyer Library. This Reader’s Advisory display is in conjunction with this year’s Missouri State University Public Affairs Conference, April 2008. Featured are MSU Libraries’ collections related to the theme of seeking solutions for positive change in situations of conflict and violence in homes, schools, local communities and the world.

Art of Africa - Exhibit Reception

On Wednesday, April 16, 2008, there will be a reception for the Art of Africa exhibit currently on display in Meyer Library. The reception will take place from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in Special Collections (Meyer 306). This is an opportunity to meet the students and supporters who worked on this project. The public is invited. Student Photographic Society Show in Meyer Library

MSU’s Student Photographic Society will have its first annual juried show in Meyer Library. This display of student photographs will be on the first and second levels of the library from April 7 to April 27, 2008. The show will be juried by noted American photographer Emmet Gowin. Meet the Author of A Shout in the Sunshine

To celebrate International Children’s Book Day, the Curriculum Resource Center (CRC) at Meyer Library on the Missouri State University campus will host the first in an annual series of presentations by area writers of books for children and young adults. Children in grades 4 through 9, teachers, librarians, and those interested in writing are encouraged to attend.

Ms. Mara Cohen Ioannides will read from her children’s book, “A Shout in the Sunshine,” as well as talk about how she gathered information for the book.

In 1492 when King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella expelled the Jewish community of Spain, the refugees went to Thessalonika, a community already home to a diverse Jewish population with deep roots in Greece. Set in tumultuous times for the Greek Jewish community, the book explores what happens when two very different groups must learn to live together.

David’s family works as fine fabric merchants. David’s father … hires Miguel to work in their store and agrees to carry some of the fine fabric that the Spanish weavers offer. David and Miguel become close, teaching each other their language. Their families reach out to each other in spite of their superstitions and different religious practices. When tensions develop between the groups, they know the ruling Muslims would blame all the Jews for the chaos. Both families are anxious that their differences not cast a shadow on their relationships. Set in the fifteenth century, the story is applicable to current events. The author has fictionalized for the reader a glimpse of forgotten Jewish history. But the conflict is real.

Art of Africa - An Exhibit in Meyer Library

During Fall Semester 2007, the students in Dr. Billie Follensbee’s course ART 386: Art of Africa researched art and artifacts from throughout the African continent. That artwork, along with the students’ exhibit text, is now on display in Special Collections and Archives, located in Meyer Library Room 306. Visitors will learn about the symbolism, construction methods, and cultural significance of a wide variety of artwork. The exhibit features artwork on loan from Drury University. Special Collections is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with extended hours on Tuesdays when classes are in session. For more information, call Anne Baker at 417-836-4298.

Springfield Campus Libraries Closing at 5:00pm

The Reference & Government Information Department of Meyer Library presents a Reader’s Advisory display, Environmental Sustainability: Resources and Responsibility, in the New Books Area of the Meyer Library. Featured are MSU Libraries’ collections of books, government documents and other resources that relate to the MSU campus Focus the Nation: the largest teach-in in history initiative this January.

We invite you into the New Books Area of Meyer Library to browse the display, books on the topic that can be checked out, and accompanying bibliographies that highlight the rich resources available from your MSU Libraries’ collections.

Meyer Library Orientation Tours Scheduled
