Souder Store Café
Souder, MO
Every Friday Evening

The jam session was started in 1996 by Dennis and Denise Souder.  The old Souder Store and post office closed in 1992 and some say the town of Souder almost died.  Now the store is a restaurant and is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.  At the Friday jam session, songs accompanied by acoustic instruments as well as electric guitars and a snare drum are played for the listeners as they eat.  An invited gospel group is featured on Saturday.

The music has a strong 50s and 60s country music and honky-tonk sound, due in large part to the sounds of the electric guitars and drum.  Songs such as Folsom Prison Blues, Okie from Muskogee, Dang Me, and Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms are featured.  I was told, however, that on some Friday evenings old-time fiddle music and older songs are featured.

Directions from Springfield: drive east on US-60 for 44 miles; drive south on MO-5 for 30 miles; drive east on MO-95 for 6 miles; turn left onto CR-139 [See map].  Photographs are from July 7, 2000.

Musicians sitting in a circle. The musicians, some of whom have never played with the each other before, rotate around the circle so everyone has a chance to sing.
A photograph of the restaurant crowd watching and listening to the performers. The restaurant seats about a hundred comfortably, and the place is often full.  Listeners enjoy eating burgers, catfish, shrimp, and other menu choices.
