Peace and Conflict:

Perspectives on Terrorism

A Display and Readers’ Shelf
In the New Books Area at Meyer Library Spring 2003

The Reference Department in Meyer Library begins their Readers’ Advisory & Displays program for 2003 with a consideration of terrorism. Various books within the library's collections are identified, together addressing a diversity of aspects involved with this crucial subject of concern for the global community. The bibliography lists many of the books showcased in the display along with selected government publications, web sites, and book reviews from the periodical literature. 'Peace and Conflict: Perspectives on Terrorism' is displayed on the first floor of Meyer Library in the New Books area which is just past and to the left of the Government Documents service desk. Display case materials are presented and some of the cited publications have been pulled from the Meyer Library collections and placed with the display for browsing and checkout by interested readers. The library has excellent content to offer readers and researchers on this timely and important topic!

Terrorism

“Terrorism — motivated variously by religious, nationalist, or political beliefs — has claimed countless thousands of lives through history and caused recurrent public panic and political disruption. Despite its gruesome toll, terrorism has had relatively little lasting impact. It has been “little more than a nuisance,” according to Walter Laqueur, a leading historian on the subject….

Terrorism has become more potent in the 20th century, according to Laqueur, at the same that combating it has become more difficult. Ever more lethal firearms and explosives have supplanted the dagger and pistol of earlier eras. Meanwhile, the rise of mass media has increased exponentially the terrorists' ability to instill fear among officials and citizens. Counterterrorism has depended either on infiltration or repression — as in communist Russia or, to some extent, in Northern Ireland. But Laqueur notes that present-day law enforcement agencies in democratic nations have less freedom to maneuver than the police forces of late-19th-century Europe. “By and large,” he concludes, “counterefforts against terrorists by democratic states have been only partly effective in recent times.”

From “War on Terrorism: Can the U.S. Contain the Global Terrorist Threat?” CQ Researcher, 2001, pages 827-828.

The CQ Researcher is an excellent resource from SMSU Libraries digesting, reviewing, giving facts, history, and analysis every week on major political, economic, and cultural issues. Check it Out.
