Stephen Jay Gould. Life & Work: 1941 - 2002
“Stephen Jay Gould, 60, Harvard University paleontologist and evolutionary theorist who was also the author of a popular column, "This View of Life," which ran in Natural History magazine from 1974 to 2001; many of those columns were incorporated into various best-selling books; as a scientist, he was perhaps best known for his theory of "punctuated equilibria," developed with Niles Eldredge in the early 1970s, which argued that evolutionary change came in sudden spurts rather than gradually; one of his books, The Mismeasure of Man (1981), was an influential rebuttal of the argument that some races were more intelligent than others; he had recently published a massive tome, The Structure of Evolutionary Theory, which he considered his masterpiece; born September 10, 1941 in New York City; died May 20 at his home in New York, of lung cancer.”
