The Office of Institutional Research originated in 1974 and was once a part of the Office of Planning and Policy, which dissolved around 1992. Institutional Research is responsible for designing, analyzing, and presenting data and research in regard to institutional planning, policy decisions, institutional marketing, and student and program assessment. The office also reports data to numerous state and federal agencies such as the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS), the Missouri Commission on Higher Education (MCHE), the Department of Education (DHE), and the Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Other reports include the Departmental Profiles, Fact Books, and Data Digest.
Many reports created prior to 1990 were microfilmed by Institutional Research (see Series V for list). Today, many reports are created electronically and saved in a text format.
(Above information taken from the Office of Institutional Research website.)
This collection holds a wealth of statistical information on the university and documents changes in areas such as student enrollment, faculty, degree programs, facilities, and salaries. Information spans 1961-2005 and is separated into the six series below. When possible, three copies of each item were held for the collection.
Note that copies of the Fact Book were pulled from Institutional Research in order to create a full set (three copies each) for the University Records Group Collection. Extra copies of the Fact Book can be found in the Subject Files series.
Series I: Institutional Reports
This series contains reports created for specific institutions. The institution’s names are included in the title
of the reports (similar to the microfiche) and are arranged chronologically.
Series II: Data Digest
The Office of Institutional Research produced a newsletter entitled Data Digest. This series contains Volumes
1-15, spanning 1980-1995.
Series III: Final Reports
The Final Reports series consists of bound reports received from the Office of Institutional Research. Some
examples of the reports include cost analysis of the university, academic salaries by department, degree program
costs, characteristics and performance of freshman, etc. Reports are arranged chronologically. Unbound copies of
some reports can be found within the folders. Please note that the reports are organized by the date in the title
(e.g., The Retention of 1978 Freshman will be found in 1978, not 1983 when the report was published).
Series IV: Subject Files
The materials in this series consist of books, reports, and articles used by the Office of Institutional Research.
These materials are arranged alphabetically.
Series V: Microfiche
This series contains 2200 microfiche with 90 titles of studies conducted by Institutional Research. The microfiche
have been individually foldered and are listed in the original order.
Series VI: Oversized
Materials in this series consist of oversized items pulled from other series. A separation sheet will mark the
original location of the item.
