Biographical/Historical Sketch

The materials in this collection were originally stored in the vault in the Bursar’s Office in Carrington Hall, and were under the care of the Secretary of the Board of Governors. The collection was transferred to the Archives after the project archivist for the NHPRC grant learned of the materials, and an agreement was reached between the Secretary of the Board of Governors and the Bursar to transfer the materials.

Scope and Content

The collection spans from 1905-1995. The materials provide an interesting look into the early years of the university, such as the regulations for Irvington Hall and Faculty Payroll. Note that not all of the materials relate to the office of the Board of Governors.

Series I: Property Abstracts
Boxes 1-20 contain abstracts for properties purchased by the university from 1905 to 1995. Please contact the Special Collections and Archives Department for more information.

Series II: Financial Records
This series contains various financial records including bound volumes of check records, payroll and petty cash, and yearly audits. Note that some oversized bound volumes can be found on the shelf, unboxed. The records are listed chronologically, but the boxed and unboxed volumes are arranged to fit in the box or on the shelf.

Series III: Building Records
The building records in this series vary from preliminary designs for campus buildings, to details of the various aspects in additions to the dormitory buildings, and the daily activity in the construction of the library in 1979-1980. Three oversized preliminary design booklets can be found in the oversized box with the certificates and diplomas of Roy Ellis.

Series IV: Historical Materials
This series contains various historical materials related to early campus organizations such as the Bentonian and Carrington Literary Societies, the Debating Club, and the Dramatic Club. Documents regarding faculty and the indexed minutes of the Board of Regents meetings are also housed with these materials.

Series V: Roy Ellis’ Certificates and Diplomas
Contains diplomas for Roy Ellis, president of MSU from 1927 to 1961.
