1907 - 1917 W. T. Carrington
1918 - 1926 Clyde M. Hill
1926 - 1962 Roy Ellis
1961 - 1964 Leland E. Traywick

Missouri State University was founded on March 17, 1905, as the Missouri State Normal School, Fourth District. Classes were first held in June of 1906. The school was granted forty acres by the city of Springfield on the corner of Grand and National streets. The first building completed was Academic Hall which is now Carrington Hall. W. T. Carrington served as the first president till 1918. This record group does not contain records from the administration except for commencement programs.

As the college’s second president, Clyde M. Hill saw the faculty and student population double in size, the construction of the Education Building (Hill Hall) and the Science Building (Siceluff Hall). "In 1925-26 President Hill was granted leave to finish the work for his doctorate at Columbia University. During his absence his duties were parceled out between two faculty committees [an Executive Committee and a Financial Committee]." This record group does not contain records from the Hill administration except for commencement programs.

Dr. Roy Ellis became president in 1926 and served till 1961. Born near Seymour, Missouri, on March 9, 1888. In 1914 he received his A.B. and B.S. in Education from Missouri University. He received his M.A. from Harvard University in 1917 and received his Ph.D. in political science and economics in 1930 from Columbia University. His term took the college through the Great Depression, World War II, and the dramatic post-war enrollment boom.

During his tenure, the institution formally changed its name to Southwest Missouri State College, and numerous buildings were constructed such as a library (now Cheek Hall), the Student Union, agricultural building (Karls Hall), and the first residence hall (now part of Wells House). After thirty-five years of service, Roy Ellis retired in 1961.

Dr. Leland Traywick served as the fourth president from 1961 to 1964. Leland Eldridge Traywick was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma on June 7, 1915 and "held the degrees of A.B. and A.M. from the University of Missouri and the in economics from the University of Illinois." The Greenwood Laboratory School was established, an addition was added to the library, and with federal loans extensive additions were made to the residence halls. "Fairly early in his administration tension began to build up in the faculty, and friction developed between the president and the Board as to where lay the 'center of gravity' in governance of the College. These 'divergent views' gradually grew to the point where they were irreconcilable." Dr. Traywick resigned in 1964.

Dr. Arthur Mallory succeeded Traywick in 1964 and served until 1970. Arthur Lee Mallory was a native of southwest Missouri, born December 26, 1932, held the B.S. degree in Education from S.M.S., and received his master’s and Ed.D. in Education from the University of Missouri. Mallory’s administration presided over the construction of Craig Hall and Blair-Shannon Hall while the theater department performed several notable USO tours. President Mallory’s tenure included the turbulent years of the late 1960s.

In 1971, Dr. Duane G. Meyer took over the presidency and served until 1983. His presidency saw the institution change its name to Southwest Missouri State University (1972), the construction of Temple Hall, Morris Hall, the library building (Meyer Library), and the Hammons Student Center. During the 1970s the university’s enrollment increased every year.

In 1983, Dr. Marshall Gordon became the seventh president of Missouri State University. "President Gordon’s tenure witnessed enrollment growth to over 20,000 students (becoming the largest undergraduate institution in the state) and the creation of many new programs. The administrative structure was revised to create five vice presidents and six colleges." Hammons House, Glass Hall, and the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts were constructed. Dr. Gordon’s term as president ended in 1992. Dr. Russell Keeling served as chief executive officer from February, 1992 June, 1993.
