Robert Palmer began his career drawing cartoons in 1945, when he worked in New York as a ghost artist on the comic strip “The Spirit.” Shortly thereafter, he also drew political cartoons for the New York Daily News. In 1953, he came to Springfield, Missouri, to draw political cartoons for the Springfield News-Leader, where he continued until his retirement in 1991. He won several awards for his work, and his cartoons were often reprinted in larger publications, such as in the New York Times. Mr. Palmer passed away in 1999.

This collection contains cartoons drawn by Robert Palmer for both the Springfield News-Leader and for the New York Daily News. The cartoons span from 1952 to 1991. The collection is arranged chronologically.
Between September 1965 and September 1981, Mr. Palmer wrote dates on the cartoons themselves. Before and after these dates, however, exact dates can be difficult to determine. Where possible, months and years have been written on the folders to indicate the time span of the cartoons. Where months cannot be determined, only years are given.
Also, some cartoons in the collection originally had sticky-notes attached. Most of the notes had numbers written on them, but some were blank. These cartoons were photocopied, and the notes were removed. Both the original cartoons and the photocopies were placed in the folders together.
