Description of Materials

Photograph and handwritten description of Mr. Haskell and his telescope. The handwritten description that accompanied the 8x10 photograph details the "12 inch reflectin [sic] scope" and gives the address "729 N. Main." Further research indicates this was the Fellows house. A newspaper article dated June 18, 1941, from the Leader and Press indicates:

"For years a roomer was John E. Haskell, a Frisco mechanic who was long Springfield’s outstanding amateur astronomer. He built a telescope in the yard, the biggest and best one in the city, and scores of Springfieldians have gone there to view the stars .… The telescope is gone, but the base on which is stood is still in the side yard."

Note on Small Collections

Included among the Missouri State University holdings are various collections that are comprised of only a few folders. While these are discrete, unique collections, the finding aids are limited to a brief description and container list (when needed). These materials are designated with an SC (for Small Collection), then are divided into two categories (Labor Archives and general Manuscript), and a collection number. (Example: SC-M-001)
