Missouri State University Libraries

Special Collections and Archives:

The Ozarkiana Collection is a selective collection of books, journals, and manuscripts concerning the social, cultural, political, and economic history of Southwest Missouri and the Missouri Ozarks region. The collection also contains materials by and about notable Southwest Missourians.

The manuscript collections range from the records of local businesses and families to broad collecting areas aimed at documenting the diversity of the Ozarks region. The format of materials includes correspondence, business records, photographs, oral histories, and ephemera. Among the fast growing collecting areas is material related to the local railroad industry. The department also makes an effort to collect materials related to under-documented segments of Ozarks life and society. This effort has led to the creation of the Ozarks Jewish Archives and the Ozarks Lesbian and Gay Archives.

The book holdings in the Ozarkiana Collection includes publications by and about Southwest Missourians and about the Missouri Ozarks region. There are county histories for most of the counties in the Missouri Ozarks, a complete set of books by Harold Bell Wright, author of Shepherd of the Hills, and other books concerning Ozarks history and culture, such as Vance Randolph's Sticks in the Knapsack & Other Ozark Folktales. In addition, the Ozarkiana Collection includes many books written by Missouri State University faculty.

Information on the book holdings is generally found through the University Libraries online catalog, SWAN, while finding aids for archival collections are included in the Collection Lists.
