Organizational History

Prior to 1889, those plumbers, steamfitters and gas fitters who were organized were members of independent local unions with either no affiliation, or affiliation with a variety of trades. By 1889, however, local union leaders began to consider other ways to unite national pipe trades journeymen to deal with mutual problems, including how to treat traveling members, build apprenticeship, and provide strike aid. In response to these issues, the United Association was officially born on October 11, 1889.

During the early part of the twentieth century, UA progressed as a national union. Landmark accomplishments included the creation of a formal five-year apprenticeship program, the expansion of UA influence to include construction of industrial plants and public utilities, and a growth in membership to 60,000 by the year 1929.

It was during that period of growth that Local 178 was chartered on November 11, 1905.

As with other unions, UA membership fluctuated after World War I in response to changing economic conditions. World War II triggered a period of steady growth.

Today the UA has a membership of nearly 300,000 members in 378 locals throughout the United States and Canada. As of 1999, Local 178 includes 450 members.

Scope and Content

The collection contains materials from 1947 to 1991, with the bulk of the material from the 1960s and 1970s. The records incorporate a wide range of materials divided into ten series.

Series of particular interest include: Minutes, including those of the regular meetings from 1951 to 1984; Correspondence files; and, Subject files, covering a variety of topics, including information on the procedures and results of elections, legal matters, notes on organizing the Branson area, and monthly union reports.
