Organizational History
Founded in 1921 by the AFL as the Building Service Employees International Union (BSEIU), the SEIU represents technicians, professionals, and para-professionals in the health care field, as well as persons engaged in maintenance, sales, service, protection and operation of all types of institutions. In its early years, the union grew at a slow pace, but saw substantial increase in membership in the years following World War II. By 1998, there were over one million members, approximately half of who are women.
SEIU, Local 50 is based in St. Louis, but had an office in Springfield. From this office, the Business Representative worked with a wide range of industries throughout the region.
Scope and Content
Documented in this collection are the activities of SEIU, Local 50. While Local 50 is based in St. Louis, the materials included here concentrate on Springfield and Southwest Missouri. The employees organized in this region can be grouped by four basic categories: building services; health care; hotels and resorts; and public employees.
The bulk of the material is from the 1970s and early 1980s. Within the timeframe of these records, they provide significant documentation of the SEIU’s organizational efforts in the region. In addition to documenting activities of the various businesses, the collection includes information on attempts at unionizing hospital employees.
Within the collection is correspondence between the business representative and SEIU Local 50’s home office in St. Louis, as well as contact with the union members and company managers. Other types of records include bylaws, news releases from SEIU’s national and regional offices, agreements with the various businesses, and employee grievances. There are also publications and research reports used in the Springfield office.
Strengths of the collection include the materials documenting the SEIU’s efforts to organize employees and the efforts of the employers to discourage employees from joining. There is also information on key issues within some of the industries, including leave time and working hours.
Due to the reporting requirements of the St. Louis office, the collection also includes a significant amount of material on the work of the business representative, including correspondence, status reports and financial reports. This material helps illustrate the work required of a field agent of the home office in St. Louis.
